If you’re planning a trip in the North West on a Sunday, please check journey planners before you head out.

Since Sundays are outside of conductors' regular working week, we've made some changes to the schedule. It's a good idea to check before you embark on your journey.

Changes to Services Between Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness

Due to ongoing emergency engineering works, the railway between Corkickle and Whitehaven is closed until further notice

While this work is ongoing:

• Buses will replace trains between Corkickle and Whitehaven
• Details of what’s happening, and its progress, can be found on the Network Rail Website

Ravensthorpe station is now closed until 2028 whilst the station is rebuilt as part of the multi-billion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade.

Upon completion, Ravensthorpe station will be relocated 200 metres west of the current site and will feature an island platform, allowing longer trains to stop at the station and more space and seats for customers. The station will also be fully accessible and step-free, with new lifts installed to improve accessibility for people with mobility challenges and to facilitate smoother access to platforms.

From Sunday, 14 December until the May timetable change in 2026, Northern will be running a rail replacement service between Ravensthorpe and Dewsbury, from the bus stop on Leeds Road, approximately a 10-minute walk from the current station location.

From Sunday, 17 May, the rail replacement bus service will be withdrawn.  Frequent local bus services remain available for travel between Dewsbury, Ravensthorpe and Mirfield, including the 202, 203 and 205 services. Please note that ticket acceptance with local bus operators is not in place.

Works will be taking place at Huddersfield until January 2027. During this time, the station will operate with a reduced number of platforms, meaning there will be changes to the timetable for services that would usually start or end their journey at Huddersfield. Local stopping services that run between Huddersfield and Leeds / Bradford are affected. Here's how the changes impact those routes:

Leeds stopping service, which previously ran from Huddersfield, now runs from Leeds to Bradford Interchange via Brighouse. 
A replacement bus service will run from Huddersfield, Deighton and Brighouse to connect with train services. 
 

Due to planned improvement works taking place as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade on weekends between Saturday 5 to Sunday 13 September, no trains can travel through Huddersfield to Dewsbury.

Engineers will be working on:

• Calder Road bridge works
• Ravensthorpe station works
• Overhead Line Equipment installation in the Huddersfield, Deighton & Mirfield areas
• Track installation in Mirfield for new fast lines
• Huddersfield station roof canopy works

While works are taking place, Northern services may not run, be subject to an amended timetable, or be replaced by a bus service.

Changes to Northern weekend services from Saturday 5 to Sunday 13 September

Bradford Interchange (Halifax on Sundays) to Leeds via Dewsbury

Trains from Bradford Interchange (Halifax on Sundays) to Leeds via Dewsbury will not run.

Wigan to Leeds via Dewsbury (Saturdays only)

Trains from Wigan to Leeds via Dewsbury (Saturdays only) will be diverted via Bradford Interchange.

Buses will replace trains between Halifax and Dewsbury and will run on an hourly service calling at Brighouse, Deighton, and Mirfield.

Summary of changes to other operators’ services:

TransPennine Express trains between Huddersfield and Dewsbury will not operate on weekends. Buses will replace trains between Huddersfield and Leeds (fast service), Huddersfield and Wakefield Kirkgate via Dewsbury, and Huddersfield and Dewsbury.

Grand Central trains between Bradford Interchange and London Kings Cross will start at Halifax. A rail replacement service will operate between Brighouse and Wakefield Kirkgate via Mirfield.

Due to planned improvement works taking place between Marsden and Mirfield as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade between Saturday 19 September to Sunday 4 October, no trains can travel through Huddersfield station.

Engineers will be working on:

• Renewal of track and upgrading of the drainage system in Gledholt tunnel, to the west of Huddersfield, to improve reliability.
• Addition of two new lines of track in the Deighton area, which will be the dedicated fast lines, allowing faster direct services to overtake stopping trains and helping to deliver a more reliable railway.
• Continuation of the restoration of the historic roof at Huddersfield station, preserving its heritage while providing more shelter for customers.
• Upgrading of the signalling and installation of overhead line equipment.

While works are taking place, Northern services may not run, be subject to an amended timetable, or be replaced by a bus service.

Wigan Wallgate to Leeds via Dewsbury

Trains will split to run between Wigan Wallgate and Todmorden, and between Halifax and Leeds via Dewsbury.

Sheffield to Huddersfield

Trains will run between Sheffield and Lockwood only. A replacement bus will run between Huddersfield and Lockwood.

TransPennine Express trains will not run between Stalybridge and Mirfield. 

Services will run on an amended timetable and be diverted between Manchester Victoria and Dewsbury via the Calder Valley.

Changes to Northern services from Monday 21 September – Friday 2 October

Wigan Wallgate to Leeds via Dewsbury

Trains will be split to run between Wigan Wallgate and Todmorden, and between Halifax and Leeds via Dewsbury.

Sheffield to Huddersfield

Trains will run between Sheffield and Lockwood only. A replacement bus will run between Huddersfield and Lockwood.

Travel advice:

Newcastle – Morpeth/Chathill

• Buses will replace trains on this line on 26 & 27 September

Newcastle – Ashington

• It was previously communicated that buses would replace trains on 26 and 27 September. This has now changed.
• On 26 September, trains will run as normal until 16:25, after which buses will replace trains between Northumberland Park - Ashington. 
• On 27 September, a full train service will operate as normal.

On 3 / 4 October, buses will replace trains between: 

• Newcastle – Morpeth/Chathill

Due to planned improvement works taking place at Church Fenton as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October, no trains can travel through Church Fenton station.

Engineers will be working on the removal of Common Lane bridge at Church Fenton station and the installation of a new bridge at the station. The new structure will have sufficient space to enable overhead line electrification wires to run underneath, which will help to deliver a greener, quieter, faster railway.

Additionally, improvement works will be taking place between Stalybridge and Heaton Lodge, meaning that no trains will be able to run through Huddersfield.

Changes to Northern services

Huddersfield to Sheffield

Trains will start and terminate at Lockwood. Buses will replace trains between Huddersfield and Lockwood.

Blackpool North to York

Trains will start and terminate at Leeds instead of York.  

Leeds to York via Garforth

Trains will run between Leeds and Selby. Rail replacement buses will run between Micklefield and York via Church Fenton.  

York to Hull/Bridlington

Trains will be diverted between Selby and York and won’t run via Church Fenton.  

Sheffield to York

Trains between Sheffield and York will not run. Rail replacement buses will run between Moorthorpe and York.  

Changes to other operators’ services:

TransPennine Express trains will not be able to run through Huddersfield or between Leeds and York.  

Buses will replace trains between Huddersfield and Brighouse via Deighton and will run between Stalybridge and Huddersfield (stopping and direct services).

Buses will replace trains between Leeds and York.

Cross Country trains will also be affected.

Changes to Northern services

Blackpool North to York

Trains will start and terminate at Leeds instead of York.  

Leeds to York via Micklefield

Buses will replace trains between Leeds and York via Micklefield.  

Halifax to Hull (Leeds to Selby on Sundays)

Trains will run between Halifax and Leeds on Saturdays. Buses will replace trains between Leeds and Selby via Micklefield.

Changes to other operators’ services:

TransPennine Express trains will run on an amended timetable and will be diverted via Castleford between Leeds and Selby/York.

CrossCountry trains will also be affected.

Due to planned improvement work on the line, services will be amended between Middlesbrough and Saltburn on the following dates:

• Saturday 17 October
• Sunday 18 October 

Travel advice: 

• Trains between Bishop Auckland / Darlington to Saltburn will only run to Middlesbrough
• Buses will replace trains between Middlesbrough - Saltburn and all intermediate stations

Due to planned improvement work on the line between Hatfield & Stainforth and Gilberdyke, services will be amended between Doncaster and Hull on the following dates:

• Saturday 17 October
• Sunday 18 October

On 17 & 18 October buses will replace trains between:

• Doncaster to Hull and all intermediate stations

Due to planned improvement work on the line between Rochdale and Manchester Victoria, services will be amended on the following date:

Travel advice:

Buses will replace trains between Rochdale and Manchester Victoria.

Please allow extra time for your journey and check your journey before travelling.

Ticket acceptance:

There will be no train or rail replacement bus service between Manchester Victoria, Ashton-under-Lyne and Stalybridge. Please use local Bee Network bus services - valid rail tickets and passes will be accepted, or you can pay as you go.

Due to planned improvement work on the line between Poppleton and York, services will be amended on the following dates:

• Saturday 24 October
• Sunday 25 October

• Buses will replace trains between Poppleton and York and all intermediate stations
• Engineering work is also taking place on other routes, affecting onward journeys, including those between York, Leeds and Selby

Onward travel from York

On Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 October and Saturday 31 October & Sunday 1 November

• Trains will run between Leeds – Selby/Hull 
• Buses replace trains between York and Micklefield

Between Monday 26 – Friday 30 October 

• Trains will run between Leeds – Micklefield and Selby – York (express only)
• Buses replace trains between York and Micklefield

Changes to Northern services:

Blackpool North to York

Trains will start and terminate at Leeds instead of York.  

Leeds to York via Garforth

Trains will run between Leeds and Micklefield. Rail replacement buses will run between Micklefield and York via Church Fenton.  

York to Hull/Bridlington

Trains from Bridlington/Hull will start and terminate at Selby. Rail replacement buses will run between Selby and York.  

York to Sheffield via Moorthorpe

Trains between Sheffield and York will not run. Rail replacement buses will run between Moorthorpe and York.  

Changes to other operators’ services:

TransPennine Express trains will not be able to run between Leeds and York and will also be affected by major works taking place at York station.

Services will run to an amended timetable and may be replaced by buses.

Buses will replace trains between Leeds and York (direct), York and Middlesbrough (hourly), and Wakefield Kirkgate and York (hourly).

CrossCountry, LNER, Lumo and Grand Central services will also be affected.

Changes to Northern services:

Blackpool North to York

Trains will start and terminate at Leeds instead of York.  

Leeds to York via Garforth

Trains will run between Leeds and Micklefield only. Replacement buses will run between Micklefield and York calling at Sherburn-in-Elmet, Church Fenton and Ulleskelf.

York to Hull/Bridlington  

Trains will be diverted between Selby and York. Replacement buses will run at peak times between Selby and York calling at Sherburn-in-Elmet, Church Fenton and Ulleskelf.

York to Sheffield via Moorthorpe  

Trains between Sheffield and York will not run. Rail replacement buses will run between Moorthorpe and York calling at Pontefract Baghill, Sherburn-in-Elmet, Church Fenton and Ulleskelf.

Changes to other operators’ services:

TransPennine Express trains will not be able to run between Leeds and York.

Replacement buses will replace trains between Leeds and York (direct) and Wakefield Kirkgate and York (hourly).

• Northern services between Leeds - Nottingham will start and terminate at Sheffield
• Northern services between Sheffield – Manchester Piccadilly will start and terminate at Grindleford at Sheffield
• If you are travelling between Dronfield and Nottingham, or any station in between, please travel via Sheffield.
• If you are travelling between Sheffield and Manchester Piccadilly, please transfer between train and bus services at Bamford 

Ticket Acceptance:

Northern tickets will be accepted on East Midlands Railway services between Sheffield and Nottingham which will call at which will call at Ilkeston, Langley Mill, Alfreton and Chesterfield.

Travel by train to watch England vs. Sri Lanka at Headingley Stadium.

Headingley Stadium is a short walk from Headingley and Burley Park stations, with Burley Park being the closest.

Trains run regularly to Headingley and Burley Park from Leeds and York.

Take an earlier or later train if you can.

Travel by train to Liverpool for the Labour Party Conference.

The conference takes place at the ACC Liverpool, which is around a 20-minute walk from Liverpool Lime Street station. Alternatively, it can be reached by local bus services or by Merseyrail services from Liverpool Central or Liverpool James Street.

How this may affect your journey:

Trains to and from Liverpool will be busier than usual throughout the conference, particularly during morning and evening peak times.

Allow extra time for boarding and connections.

Take an earlier or later train if you can.

Travel advice:

Use Northern services to Liverpool Lime Street.

If travelling onwards to the waterfront, you can connect with Merseyrail services to Liverpool James Street or use local bus services.

Travel by train for the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford.

Old Trafford is a short walk from Trafford Bar tram stop or can be reached by local bus services from Manchester city centre.

Trains in and around Manchester will be busier than usual.

Deansgate station will close from 6pm. Please use alternative Manchester stations, including Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Victoria or Manchester Oxford Road after this time.

Hull Fair takes place on Walton Street, around a 30-minute walk from Hull Paragon Interchange.

Local buses run regularly between Hull Paragon Interchange and the fairground.

Travel by train to Whitby Goth Weekend.

Trains run regularly to Whitby from Middlesbrough via the Esk Valley Line.

Travel by train to Manchester for the Manchester Christmas Markets.

How this may affect your journey:

Train services in and around Manchester are expected to be busier than usual, particularly in the evenings and at weekends.

Deansgate station will also be closed from 20.00 on Fridays and from 18.00 on Saturdays for the duration of the Manchester Christmas Markets.

Travel advice:

Please use Piccadilly, Oxford Road and Victoria stations when Deansgate is closed.
