Changes to Services Between Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness
Due to emergency engineering works, the railway between Corkickle and Whitehaven is currently closed until further notice.
A rail replacement bus service is operating to help you complete your journey. However, please note:
- Nethertown and Braystones stations are not served by rail replacement buses, the closest stations are Sellafield or St Bees.
- Train and bus times may vary throughout the day and will take longer than the train – you can plan your journey on the Northern Journey Planner or through National Rail before you travel.

Between 11 - 30 August 2025
Services between Sellafield and Whitehaven will be replaced by buses (Braystones and Nethertown will not be served at all).
Between 30 August and 13 September
Additional engineering improvement works will take place on this route for the next two weeks. Please check journey planners for the most accurate times.
- 30 August – Buses will replace trains between Millom and Whitehaven
- 31 August – There are no train services north of Barrow-in-Furness (Between - Barrow - Whitehaven). Trains will only run between Carlisle and Whitehaven. Rail replacement buses will be used on this route.
- 6 September - Buses will replace trains between Millom and Whitehaven
- 7 September - No train services between Barrow-in-Furness and Whitehaven. Trains will only run between Carlisle and Whitehaven. Rail replacement buses will be available on the rest of this route.
- (Weekdays) From Monday 1st Sep to Friday 13 September– Buses will replace trains between Corkickle and Whitehaven
From 14 September (until further notice)

Travelling to or from Nethertown & Braystones?
If replacement buses are serving this route, they are unable to call at Nethertown & Braystones stations. If you are travelling to/from these stations, please contact Customer Services (0800 200 6060 / @northernassist) or speak to station staff at staffed stations so we can help you with alternative travel arrangements.
