Can dogs travel on trains?
Yes, they can! We’re a nation of dog lovers and Northern is a dog-friendly train operator. We are delighted to welcome four-legged friends aboard all our services, so you don't have to leave them behind on your next adventure.
Remember that your pup must be on a lead at all times and are not allowed on the train seats - we ask humans to keep their feet off seats too! Consider bringing a blanket so your canine friend can be comfortable on the train floor.
Do dogs travel free on trains?
Yes! You can travel with dogs on Northern trains for free. Each adult customer can bring up to two animals at no extra cost.
Whether you’re planning a local walk or a longer day out, travelling by train means everyone can come along for the ride.
How to travel with dogs by train
New to train travel with your dog? A little preparation can help keep the journey calm and comfortable for your furry friend.
Keep your dog on a lead, bring some water and allow time for a toilet break before boarding. A familiar blanket or mat can also give them somewhere comfortable to settle.
For more advice on how to travel with dogs, we teamed up with actor and dog behaviourist Kate Lamb to provide some tips for travelling with dogs.
