Where to sit on a 6-car Northern train

What to know before boarding

Not all of the platforms on our routes are long enough to accommodate a 6-car train. This means that not all of the doors will open at every platform. At some platforms, only the rear doors will open and at others only the front doors will open. As our 6-car trains are joined in the middle, you won't always be able to walk all the way through the train to the place you need to be. It's important to board the correct carriage, as if you're not in the correct part of the train, you may not be able to get off at your stop.

If you’re unsure which part of the train to board, you can ask the conductor or a member of the station team. Just let them know your destination, and they can assist you in finding the right carriage. Onboard announcements and platform signage will also let you know where to stand or move to when approaching the station.

If you're in the wrong place

If you find yourself in the wrong section of the train, don't worry! You can move toward the correct carriages as indicated by screens and announcements. Alternatively, if you need to access the very front or rear carriage, you can disembark at an earlier station and re-board using the correct carriages for your destination.
