Whitby, made famous by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, is served by one of the UK’s oldest stations, which opened in 1836. Originally the passengers were offered carriages drawn by horses to get to Pickering, the nearby market town - thankfully, despite the area’s spooky reputation, headless horses were never used! Famed for its large goods sheds, Whitby Station had an unusual signal box, consisting of three storeys designed to allow the signalman to see over the sheds.
Nowadays the Grade II listed station sees almost 200,000 people through its doors annually. This number is given a huge boost twice every year when Whitby Gothic Weekend opens its embrace to fans of the macabre from around the world.
If you’re travelling to the popular destination of Whitby by train, there are plenty of opportunities to save money with Northern’s special offers. These include Save on the Day for last minute trips, and flexible Anytime tickets, allowing you the freedom to choose your own schedule.
