Journeys from this station
Opening in 1840, Chester Station is located beyond the city’s walls, and was originally designed as two stations, but were connected several years later. The ornate building is styled on classical Italian architecture and built from traditional Staffordshire blue stone with sandstone highlights. On Platform 4, carved into the roof beams, are wooden owls. Designed by John Thomas, sculptor to royalty, to scare away pigeons, and they are delightfully quaint.
Undergoing several redesigns over the years, Chester now has 7 platforms and sees over 5 million passengers pass through its doors annually. Nearby flows the Shropshire Union Canal, and just outside the station doors is Brook Street, a paradise for shoppers, but overlooking it all is the impressive cathedral.
