Sunderland Train Station facilities

What improvements have been made at Sunderland Train Station?

With four busy platforms, Sunderland Station lies between Middlesbrough and Newcastle-upon-Tyne on the Durham Coast Line. Constructed in the late 1830s, it played a large role in the Sunderland shipbuilding industry until its demise in the 1980s.

Once described as possessing no outstanding features, the station’s redevelopment in 2006 cost a mere 7 million pounds and resulted in a dramatic, modern building that embraced green energy and construction methods. The world-renowned Jason Bruges Studio have designed a 150m wall of lights, resulting in a stunning animated display. Two other designers, Julian Germain and Morag Morrison have created eye-catching art installations, the latter using coloured glass which allows light to spill in rainbow hues, providing an ever-changing pattern. Sunderland Station now possesses a contemporary look that befits this glorious northern town.

Sunderland is a great destination for an exciting day out for you and the kids, or with a large corporate sector, many travel here on business. Whatever your reason for visiting, Northern has a range of money-saving deals for you to enjoy, including Employee Season Tickets and Save on the Day for last-minute adventures.
