Macclesfield Train Station facilities

Serving Macclesfield in Cheshire, this station lies on the West Coast Main Line, between Manchester and Stafford. First opened in July of 1873, it now sees almost two million people through its doors annually.

Macclesfield played a crucial role in the Industrial Revolution, with over 70 water, and later steam, powered mills in the district to spin the silk that was imported from China. Although the spun silk was woven into the most beautiful fabrics, silk covered buttons were the main industry. Today the town’s museums are home to some of the machines that built Macclesfield’s economy centuries ago.

The station buildings are designed in the modernist style of the ‘50s, the stark utilitarian architecture creating a solid reliability that’s reflected in many of the stations along the West Coast Main Line. In 2007 Macclesfield Station was awarded the ‘Best Kept Station in Cheshire Award’, and the plaque is on proud display in the foyer.
