As the nights draw in and the leaves start to change, Halloween is just around the corner! The North’s cities are known for their rich history, vibrant culture and spooky settings for some of the best Halloween events in the UK. Whether you’re in Manchester or Sheffield, Leeds or Liverpool, we’ve pulled together some of the eeriest events to enjoy this year. Travelling with little ghouls? Where: Manchester City Centre

Kicking off the spooky season in style, Halloween in the City is an annual celebration that takes over Manchester's city centre with petrifying parades, ghastly games and haunted happenings. Whether it's hunting the giant inflatable #MCRMonsters that take over the city, doing the Time Warp at the monster music festival, or donning your best fancy dress to take on the Team Trick vs Team Treat Challenge, there’s a host of family-friendly events to enjoy in the city.

Manchester Scare Factory

When: 4th October – 2nd November 2024

Where: Diecast, 51 Ducie St.

All-new for 2024, Manchester Scare Factory promises a truly terrifying night in the heart of the city centre. Taking place at Diecast, choose from two immersive experiences: The Die is Cast and The Toymaker, and prepare for an adrenaline-filled evening of thrills. From the team that brought you Newsham Scream Park in Liverpool (find out more below), the attraction features live actors as you make your way through the scare maze. Note, the minimum age for this fright night is 14 and above.

Where: The Trafford Centre, Manchester

Gandeys Circus returns to the Trafford Centre for another year with a new, action-packed show for the whole family to enjoy. With a cast of skeletons, vampires and more, marvel at the acrobatic skills on display, laugh at the family-friendly comedy, and be amazed at the big thrills. Book in advance to avoid disappointment!

Where: Liverpool City Centre

Liverpool, a city steeped in history, is known for its supernatural tales. Shiverpool offers family-friendly ghost tours that take you through the city's dark and mysterious past, exploring haunted sites and hearing stories of its ghostly inhabitants. Try Liverpool’s most famous ghost walk on their Hope Street Shivers tour or hop on the Ghost Bus for a ghoulish guided tour.

Newsham Scream Park

When: 4th October – 2nd November 2024

Where: Newsham Park Hospital, Tuebrook

An immersive experience not for the faint-hearted, Newsham Scream Park is a scare maze in one of the UK’s most haunted buildings, Newsham Park Hospital. This year, choose from four different attractions: Humanimal, The Priest Hood, The Mortuary, and Under the Bed, and get ready to scare your socks off! Just like its sister site in Manchester mentioned above, Newsham Scream Park welcomes 14 year olds and above, so it’s perfect for families with older children and adults looking for the ultimate fright!

Where: Otterspool Adventure, Garston

Otterspool Adventure is an award-winning family attraction that puts on a show for the spooky season! This year, enjoy Beetle Boogie, a family-friendly live show to get you moving; explore the Haunted Trail and see what you can find; the Pumpkin Parade, on twice a day, every day; and many more activities, like go-karts, soft play, and more. You can also enjoy marshmallow toasting to really get into the autumn spirit.

Where: Newcastle Castle, Newcastle upon Tyne

What better way to celebrate Halloween than with a late-night guided tour of Newcastle Castle? Hear tales of its ghostly residents and learn about the castle's dark history – if you dare! There's also a kid-friendly Halloween night on the 28th of October, perfect for ages 7 and up. What's more, the castle is showing a range of spooky films throughout the month, from Sweeney Todd to The Exorcist, as well as themed talks.

Spooky Science at the Life Centre

When: 1st – 31st October 2024

Where: Life Science Centre, Times Square

The Life Science Centre is perfect for a frightfully fun day out in October. Stop by for their spooky science event with a host of activities and shows to enjoy. Try your hand at being a real scientist in the Experiment Zone, where you can examine real specimens, from bees to butterflies! Create a contraption in the Making Studios, before watching a live, immersive science show to inspire the next generation of scientists. For adults, there's also a Halloween Silent Disco on Friday 25th October playing the best spooky songs and 90s classics.

Easily earn first place in any costume competition with a trip to Laing Art Gallery with your kids. Perfect for young ones aged 8-14, they can learn some of the industry secrets behind SFX whilst also adorning some spooky makeup themselves. Treat your creative kids this Halloween with a trip to Laing Art Gallery and stoke their creative spirits further.

Get involved at the Leeds Central Library during one of their classic library lates and indulge in the spookiest time of the year among bookshelves and friends. The library lates give you a chance to try out new activities, develop skills, and meet other like-minded individuals. Hallow'zine is perfect for anyone 16+ and offers a great opportunity to ramp up your spooky vibes.

Where: Temple Newsam, Leeds

Something goes bump in the night at Temple Newsam – dare you discover the ghostly residents for yourself? Take a tour around the themed rooms and enjoy some creepy crafts, perfect for the whole family. If you're looking for something a bit more thrilling, venture beneath the house on a Spooky Cellar Tour, which may not be suitable for under 7s.

Support The Children's Hospital Charity and join Theo on his Hunt for Halloween Magic! Taking place in Weston Park from 2pm-8pm, enjoy live entertainment, delicious food, stalls to browse, fancy dress competitions and more. Money raised from tickets purchased will go towards supporting the charity, so you can have a spooktacular time while helping children in need.

Future Chef Squad: Halloween Holiday Special

When: 31st October 2024

Where: Blend Culinary Foundation, Cambridge Street

A great option for kids aged 11-16, this Halloween-themed cooking class will help indulge your little chef's creativity and teach them a broad range of new cooking skills to test out in the kitchen. There are also exciting recipes to uncover that could become a quick family favourite. Tickets are £30 and promise an informative, open learning environment that'll take your cooking to the next level this spooky season.

Keep the kids busy this half term with a trip to Magna Science Adventure Centre. Lincoln Ghost Walks

When: 25th - 31st October

Where: Tourist Information Centre, Castle Square

Embark on a spooky tour through the historical and winding streets of Lincoln. Learn about the sordid background of one of England's oldest cities which predates written records. This tour promises to enthrall you in multiple ghostly stories throughout Lincoln's past, without the added jumpscares that are plentiful within modern ghost tours. Perfect for younger fans of the spooky season, prepare to have your hair stand on end and butterflies rampaging around your stomach.

Monster Invasion

Where: All throughout Lincoln

Keep an eye out for the marvellous Monster Invasion which comes to Lincoln on 19th October. There will be eight monstrous giants around the city which become illuminated as night falls. Can you find them all on your own?

Heading to Hull and looking for a fright night of true terror? Tag along for a walk with Haunted Hull and Meet the Locals! Not for the faint hearted, this over 18s event is a 20 minute walk from the train station and promises to be a night you won’t forget in a hurry. A Great Halloween Adventure

Where: Godber Studio, Hull Truck Theatre

Families with a penchant for arts and crafts will love A Great Halloween Adventure 28-31 October at Hull Truck Theatre. Tickets are £6.50 per child and the activity is followed by an interactive play that makes use of whatever you have made.
