This station is one of two that serve the town of Wigan, the other being Wigan Wallgate. This tends to be the slightly busier one with nearly 1.7 million visitors using its 6 platforms every year, and with all of Wigan’s many attractions on its doorstep, it continues to carry the tourists back and forth.

Originally opened in 1838, it underwent a large transformation in the 1970s. This brought it in line with other contemporary stations, giving it a modern functional layout and passenger lift access to the platforms.

It takes approximately an hour and a half to travel by train from Wigan North Western Station to John Lennon Airport.
