Journeys from this station
The first covered train station in the world and made mention of by Simon Jenkins, in his book Britain's 100 Best Railway Stations, the Romano-Italian design Newcastle railway station is a Grade I Listed building - a building of outstanding national architectural or historic interest. On August 29, 1850, the station was inaugurated by Queen Victoria herself, and ever since that day has been a public holiday in Newcastle.
Today’s new look station, modernised within the last few years, is bright and airy, yet still with echoes to this building’s past glory. With sinuously curved arches and rigid pillars, the judicious use of glass lends an atmosphere of space to the station, allowing travellers to feel relaxed while waiting for their train.
Upon leaving the station, it’s just a short stroll to the city centre, where you’ll find museums, theatres, and numerous other attractions.
