What is a monthly train ticket?

Monthly Season Tickets

Allowing unlimited journeys between two named destinations, Season tickets run for a specified length of time - generally for a week, month or year, and offer big savings for regular passengers. An Annual Season ticket, for example, can give you 52 weeks of train journeys for the cost of 40 Weekly Season tickets that already have discounts applied. 

For the purposes of a Season ticket, a week is considered to be Monday to Friday, with weekends included for free. 

If the Monthly Season ticket doesn’t cover the route being taken, or the level of service, passengers must pay the appropriate additional fare.

Flexi Season Tickets

Northern’s Flexi Season ticket is ideal for commuters who enjoy a hybrid working practice with 2-3 days in the office and catching peak-time trains. Offering unrivalled flexibility, passengers can travel for 8 days across a period of 28 days between two named destinations. 

The Flexi ticket differs from standard season tickets as ticket holders only pay for the days travelled, and those days don’t need to be selected ahead of time. This allows passengers to catch a last-minute train if necessary, making this the perfect choice for busy commuters. 

Available as a Barcode ticket or a hard-wearing Smartcard, if you already have the latter, your Flexi Season ticket can be bought online and added to your existing card. If you choose a Barcode ticket, your online purchase will be delivered to your email address, or to your mobile app.
