Start your holiday early by travelling by train and Metro to get to the airport. The Metro is a light rail service that takes you straight to Newcastle Airport.

Take any Northern train to either Newcastle, Sunderland or Heworth, and change onto the Tyne & Wear Metro to get to the airport. More information can be found on what to expect at each station below.

Which metro line goes to Newcastle Airport?

You’ll want to join the Green Metro route in the direction of Newcastle Airport.

We always encourage you to give yourself plenty of time to travel to the airport, and consider the airport and the flight operator’s advice on when to arrive.

Where to get your train tickets to Newcastle Airport

Tickets can be bought online through the Northern website or app, and are available at all ticket offices and ticket vending machines.

If you buy online, you’ll need to collect your tickets from a ticket vending machine. Please ensure you give yourself enough time to collect your tickets before your journey begins.

If you're buying from the app, website or ticket vending machine, choose Newcastle Airport as your destination (see example of this on the Northern app). Or if you're buying from a ticket office, ask for the ticket to Newcastle Airport.

Newcastle Airport train ticket prices

Metro tickets are added to the cost of your train ticket:

  • One way ticket: £3.70 (plus the price of your train ticket)
  • Return ticket: £5.40
  • Weekly season ticket: £21.20

How to find the Metro from the train station

You'll find more information about your journey, based on the station where you change, below.

Newcastle train station

The Metro station is right underneath the train station. Head towards the exit of the train station, via the main barriers, and you'll find the Metro on the right between Burger King and the Centurion Bar. There are elevators and a lift to the Metro here.

Once in the Newcastle Central Metro station, you’ll need to head to Platform 2. A few different trains depart from this platform, so make sure you’re on a Green line train going towards the airport. The destination will be shown on the front of the train and signage on the platform will confirm whether this is the right train for you.

Trains to the airport run every 12 minutes during the daytime (Monday to Saturday) and every 15 minutes in the evenings and on Sundays. Trains run between the following times:

  • Monday to Friday: 5.50am to 23.30pm
  • Saturday: 6.20am to 23.30pm
  • Sunday: 6.40am to 23.30pm

It takes around 30 minutes to travel from Newcastle Central station to Newcastle Airport.

Sunderland train station

Your Northern train will take you straight into Sunderland station, which is shared with the Metro, so you won’t have far to travel for your changeover.

Currently, Metro trains towards the Airport run on the Green line from Platform 3. The destination will be shown on the front of the train, and signage on the platform will confirm whether this is the right train for you.

Trains to the airport run every 12 minutes during the daytime (Monday to Saturday) and every 15 minutes in the evenings and on Sundays. Trains run between the following times:

  • Monday to Friday: 5.45am to 23.30pm
  • Saturday: 5.50am to 23.30 pm
  • Sunday: 6.40am to 23.30pm

It takes around 1 hour to travel from Sunderland station to Newcastle Airport.

Heworth train station

When your train arrives at Heworth, you’re just a short walk from the Metro station. Follow the yellow Metro signage to make your way there.

Once you’re in Heworth Metro station, you’ll want to use the Green line on Platform 2. The destination will be shown on the front of the train, and signage on the platform will confirm whether this is the right train for you.

Trains to the airport run every 12 minutes during the daytime (Monday to Saturday) and every 15 minutes in the evenings and on Sundays. Trains run between the following times:

  • Monday to Friday: 5.25am to 23.10pm
  • Saturday: 5.30am to 23.10 pm
  • Sunday: 6.20am to 23.10pm

It takes around 40 minutes to travel from Heworth station to Newcastle Airport.
