Journeys from this station
Opened in 1838, Salford Central Station was originally called Salford Station; however, this created much confusion with the much smaller Salford Crescent Station, and thus, the name was changed. Just a few short years after its conception, the pillars holding the roof had to be replaced. Due to sulphur from the old trains that passed through here when Salford was enjoying its industrial heyday thanks to the silk and cotton factories, the iron pillars rapidly corroded creating a dangerous situation.
The station has recently undergone a large redevelopment programme, including the installation of ramps and lifts, making it accessible to all. Around 700,000 passengers use the station annually, and this number is set to increase as Salford is developing into a hub for contemporary entertainment and culture.
