Between the 6 and 14 January Network Rail engineers will renew 19 units of ‘switches and crossings’ which are part of the complicated track layout at Newcastle.
Switches and crossings, commonly known as points, are moveable sections of track that guide trains from one track to another allowing them to cross paths. Points have an especially limited lifespan because trains cause wear and deformation when they travel across them.
The units at Newcastle were installed in the 1980s and are becoming unreliable, with 15 failures between January and October 2017 causing delay to more than 8 million passengers who use Newcastle Station each year.
This work will make your journey more reliable but there will be disruption while we carry it out.
Northern services will be affected by this work. Trains between Newcastle and the Metrocentre will be replaced by buses. Trains which are running to/from Newcastle are expected to be very busy during the work and platforms 9 – 12 at Newcastle station will be out of use.
