Rail is a major driver of economic growth, connecting people to jobs and opportunities. At Northern, we directly employ over 7,000 people and support even more to drive economic growth in the North.
What we’ve done
We’ve been focusing on connecting more communities to economic opportunities through large scale projects like the reopening of the Northumberland Line. Since its reopening in December 2024, the line has seen over 1 million passenger journey and has improved access to education, employment and leisure opportunities for communities in the North East.
What’s next
We’re also committed to developing the next generation of rail talent by investing in early careers and the latest training technology. In 2027 we’ll launch our Training Transformation Programme, introducing immersive driver simulators and new e‑learning for conductors.
Looking ahead, we have an ambition to grow passenger numbers by 30 million by 2030 to ensure more people can be connected to opportunities across the North.
