August bank holiday
Heading out this August bank holiday? Don’t forget to check before you travel
Most of our services will be running as normal over the August bank holiday weekend (23–25 August), but there’ll be some changes due to engineering improvement work, and some trains might be busier than usual.
If you’re planning a trip, please be aware that some services may start later or finish earlier than normal, as well as being a little busier, particularly on Monday 25 August.
We’d recommend leaving plenty of time for your journey and checking before you travel.
You can plan your journey and get live train updates using the Northern app, our website, or the journey checker tool below.
Bank holiday events

Travelling between York and Sheffield – 23 to 25 August? Expect busy services.
Due to RMT industrial action affecting all CrossCountry services, Northern trains between York and Sheffield are expected to be much busier than usual over the bank holiday weekend.
Here’s what’s happening with CrossCountry services:
- Saturday 23 August – no CrossCountry services will run.
- Sunday 24 August – services will run, but trains are expected to be extremely busy due to the surrounding days of industrial action.
- Monday 25 August – a very limited CrossCountry service will run between 08:00 and 18:00.
If you’re travelling with Northern between York and Sheffield, please:
- Allow extra time for your journey.
- Check before you travel using the Northern app or website.
