Heading out on a bank holiday? Don’t forget to check before you travel

Most of our services run as normal over bank holiday weekends, but there’ll be some changes due to improvement work, and some trains might be busier than usual.

We’d recommend leaving plenty of time for your journey and checking before you travel.

You can plan your journey and get live train updates using the Northern app, our website, or National Rail.

Do trains run on bank holidays?

Bank holidays are great, and are eagerly anticipated by most of us. Whether it's a family day out in the North while the kids are off school, or a weekend getaway with your loved one, enjoy the extra time off!

Train travel during bank holidays

Train services still run over bank holidays, although there could be disruption on some routes due to ongoing essential improvement work being carried out, and some trains might be busier than usual. Where services are cancelled, we will provide alternative transport wherever possible.

You'll find up-to-date information about planned disruption on our timetables and disruptions page.

FAQs

Improvement works are often carried out over bank holidays. Unfortunately, this can sometimes lead to delays and occasionally cancellations.

We work hard to ensure that as many trains as possible run on time over bank holiday weekends. However, disruptions do occur as scheduled works are carried out by our engineers. We always try to keep these to a minimum.
