Serving nearly 1.5 million passengers annually, Barnsley Station has been incorporated into the Interchange, which includes the bus and coach station. It opened in 1850 and allowed an influx of workers to move to Barnsley and take employment in the expanding linen industry. When the coalmines took over as the main employer in the early 1900s, the workers transferred to mining.
