During the peak of the industrial revolution in 1849, Doncaster station was opened to transport freight, and was once home to the Great Northern Railway - the manufacturer of some of the most well-known locomotives including Stirling Singles, Flying Scotsman, and Mallard, which still holds the title of world's fastest steam locomotive with a top speed of 126 mph.

Over the years, the station has seen several redevelopments, the most significant being in 2005 with its integration to the Frenchgate Shopping Centre. With 9 platforms, the latest being added in 2015, lifts throughout, and even mobile phone charging points on the concourse, Doncaster Station provides today’s passengers with a streamlined service.
