Step Inside 150 Years of Railway History
Heaton TrainCare Centre, Newcastle
September 20 & 21 – Morning & Afternoon Sessions Each Day
This September, we’re opening the gates to one of Britain’s oldest working depots - Heaton TrainCare Centre - for a special event 150 years in the making.
To mark this incredible milestone, and as part of the Railway 200 national celebrations, Heaton will come to life with a weekend full of heritage, hands-on experiences, and behind-the-scenes access you won’t find anywhere else.
Whether you're a lifelong train enthusiast, a curious visitor, or just looking for a brilliant family day out, there’s something for everyone. Come and explore how the past, present and future of rail all meet at one of the oldest train care centres in the country.
What’s On
There's lots to see and do on the day:
- Guided depot tours
- Tasty food stalls
- Hands-on family activities
Come face to face with some of our iconic trains:
- Sir Nigel Gresley – The legendary A4 Pacific steam locomotive, beautifully restored and packed with history
- Northern’s Class 15x series – The everyday heroes of regional travel
- LNER and TransPennine Express fleets
- Other heritage trains to be announced soon!
Tickets
Tickets will go on sale in July and you will be able to choose from morning or afternoon sessions on both days.
£12 Adults
£5 Children (under 16)
Supporting a Good Cause
All money raised from the event will go to local charities chosen by the Heaton TrainCare team, along with our charity partner, the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).
This is a rare chance to step into a piece of railway history and celebrate the people, places, and machines that have kept the North moving for 150 years - and will carry us into the future.
We can’t wait to welcome you!
