At Northern, we recognise that noise from trains and infrastructure can affect the wellbeing of people living and working near the railway. Reducing noise pollution is critical to supporting healthier communities, protecting colleague wellbeing and ensuring rail remains a good neighbour.

What we’ve done

Our Noise Management Strategy sets out how we’re shifting from a reactive approach responding to complaints to a proactive model based on hotspots, data and targeted interventions. We’ve already mapped Noise Important Areas across our network and analysed complaint trends so we can focus our efforts where they’re needed most.

What’s next

Over the next few years, we’ll be developing detailed Noise Improvement Plans for priority areas, improve our monitoring and reporting, and upskill staff to interpret and act on data. As we operate and develop infrastructure, we will implement best practice techniques to minimise noise and consult our stakeholders and communities when we are carrying out new developments or changing how we operate where noise is a concern.
