Prepared for a Changing Climate
Climate change is already affecting how the railway operates, from hotter summers and intense storms to more frequent flooding which can lead to disruption. At Northern, adapting to these changes is essential to ensuring we can continue to deliver a service that meets the needs of the North for generations to come.
What’s next
We’re working collaboratively across the industry to better understand the risks climate change poses. In partnership with TransPennine Express, who operate across the same geography that we do, we’re developing our first Weather Resilience and Climate Change Adaptation (WRCCA) Strategy which will launch in 2026. This strategy will focus on three areas:
- People – ensuring safe, comfortable travel in extreme conditions
- Assets – strengthening the resilience of stations, depots and equipment
- Services – adapting timetables, operations and maintenance to withstand climate impacts
We will be upskilling our teams to understand the impacts of climate change and how they can protect our train service as well as improving how we manage our data, report risks and take action making sure we are ready for what’s to come.
