We produce more than 5,000 tonnes of waste across our stations and engineering locations each year. To make sure future generations have access to the materials they need, we need to reduce the amount of waste we produce and keep materials in use for longer. A circular - economy approach helps us protect natural resources, cut carbon emissions and reduce long term costs.
What we’ve done
We’ve already taken major steps to improve how we manage waste, standardizing waste processes, upgrading facilities, and improving instructions to make waste segregation clearer. Our colleagues have received training on waste handling, and we’ve reviewed our waste contractor arrangements to ensure recyclables stay separated during collection and waste is diverted from landfill where possible.
What’s next
We’re also preparing for the new Simpler Recycling Regulations, which will see the introduction of new recycling bins for all Northern staff and at our high footfall stations. Over the next few years, we’ll develop a Circular Economy Plan, embed circular design principles into infrastructure projects, and explore new reuse opportunities with our waste contractor.
