How do I get a discount code?

  • Head to the sign up page
    • Don't forget to tick the "I'd like to receive emails" box if you'd like to hear more from Northern
  • Enter your details
  • You'll then be sent an email with your unique discount code
  • Download the Northern app on Android or Apple
  • Enter the following details into the search screen:
    • Your origin (your starting station)
    • Your destination (where are you heading?)
    • Select a single journey
    • Choose the date and time you want to travel
    • Add your promo code
    • Hit the "search live times and prices" button
  • Select the time you want to travel
    • Look out for the piggy bank symbol - that means the promo has been applied
  • Go through the booking process and buy your selected ticket

I'm seeing a "Promotion not applied" message?

This can mean a number of things.

Please check the following requirements:

  • Are you searching for a Northern train route?
  • Are you searching for a route that has Advance tickets available?
    • Check the tool above if you're unsure which Advance routes run via your station

  • The promoter of this promotion is Northern Trains Limited (trading as Northern) of Northern House, 9 Rougier St, York YO1 6HZ (the “Promoter”).
  • The “Promotional Routes” means any of the Promoter’s rail services available to view at
  • 50% off introductory discount applies to new customers only
  • One code per account 
  • Offer valid on Advance purchase tickets on Northern services only
  • Discount code only valid on the Northern app
  • Valid for one transaction only
  • Up to two children under the age of 5 years may travel free with each adult that holds a Qualifying Ticket.
  • All purchases of Qualifying Tickets are subject to the Promoter’s terms and conditions available to view at and
  • A Qualifying Ticket cannot be purchased in conjunction with a Railcard. 
  • A Qualifying Ticket is valid for travel ONLY on the date and service stated on the ticket and passengers must travel in the Class shown on the ticket.
  • Passengers may not start, break and resume, or end their journey at any intermediate station except to change to/from connecting trains as shown on their Qualifying Ticket or other valid travel itinerary.
