Looking for something?

From 2028, if you're travelling across Manchester and the wider North West, your journey will be more comfortable as we introduce a fleet of refurbished trains.

Northern is bringing 37 refurbished Class 350 trains to our network as part of a wider programme of investment in rail travel across the North.

We will begin running the first refurbished trains from early 2028, gradually replacing our existing Class 323 fleet and providing you with a range of new features and improvements.

The refurbished Class 350 trains will offer:

  • Air conditioning throughout the train
  • More space thanks to additional carriages
  • Luggage racks
  • At-seat power sockets on many routes across the North West
  • Improved reliability
  • A more modern and comfortable onboard environment

The trains will also be fitted with technology that helps them perform better in challenging autumn and winter conditions, reducing delays and improving reliability for you.

Investing in better journeys

Before entering service, the trains will undergo a £25 million refurbishment programme between October 2027 and February 2029.

The refurbished Class 350 fleet is expected to improve reliability and create additional capacity across the North West while supporting Northern's plans for future growth.

Part of Northern's wider investment programme

The refurbished trains are being introduced ahead of Northern's planned fleet replacement programme, which will see hundreds of new trains introduced across the North from around 2030 onwards.

The arrival of the Class 350s will help deliver improvements for customers sooner, while work continues on the next generation of trains for the region.
