Heavy rain and winds are expected on Friday 14 November and Saturday 15 November. A number of yellow weather warnings for wind are in place.

Flooding is expected in places, and strong winds may bring down trees onto the railway.

Our advice to customers is DO NOT TRAVEL on a number of routes until the end of the day on Friday 14 November:

  • Calder Valley route (Leeds - Bradford Interchange - Halifax - Manchester Victoria and Leeds - Brighouse - Manchester Victoria)
  • All routes in the North West of England

Rail replacement buses will NOT be provided on these routes. Trains are experiencing significant disruption and the trains which can run may be heavily delayed and/or cancelled, and are experiencing severe overcrowding.

There are also the following changes to services on Friday 14 Nov:

  • Rotherham Central - there will be no services to/from Rotherham Central from 16:00 on Friday 14 November until 12:00 Saturday 15 November
  • Hull - Halifax - services will terminate/start at Bradford Interchange (operating between Hull and Bradford Interchange in both directions)
  • Hexham - Battersby - services will terminate/start at Middlesbrough (operating between Hexham and Middlesbrough in both directions).
  • Leeds North West - a reduced timetable will operate 09:00 - 16:00 between:
    • Leeds - Skipton (both directions)
    • Leeds - Ilkley (both directions)
    • Leeds - Bradford Forster Square (both directions)
    • Ilkley - Bradford Forster Square (both directions)
  • A reduced service will operate on the following routes:
    • Liverpool Lime Street - Manchester Victoria (both directions)
    • Liverpool Lime Street - Wigan North Western (both directions)
    • Manchester Victoria - Wigan North Western (both directions)
    • Stockport - Chester (both directions)
    • Manchester Piccadilly - Stoke/Crewe (both directions)
    • Manchester Piccadilly - Hazel Grove (both directions)
    • Manchester Piccadilly - Hadfield (both directions)
    • Manchester Piccadilly - Alderley Edge (both directions)
    • Windermere/Barrow - Manchester Airport (both directions)
    • Southport - Manchester Oxford Road (both directions)
    • Manchester Piccadilly - Rose Hill (both directions)
    • Blackburn - Rochdale (both directions)
    • Headbolt Lane - Blackburn (both directions)
    • Manchester Piccadilly - New Mills Central (both directions)
    • Carlisle - Whitehaven (both directions)

Ticket acceptance

If your Northern train has been cancelled, you can travel on other Northern trains before or after your original time (on the same route, valid all day). 

If your Northern train is cancelled, you can use your ticket on Transpennine Express, EMR or LNER trains up to 2 hours before or 2 hours after at no extra cost.  

Refunds and Delay Repay 

If your train is cancelled, you can claim a full refund, (provided your ticket was purchased through Northern). More details can be found on the refunds page.

If your train is delayed you can claim a refund depending on the length of delay using the Delay Repay portal.
