We’ve made it easier than ever to claim a refund on your train ticket.
Depending on your train ticket and what happened, you might be able to get some - or all - of your money back.

If your train is cancelled or you’re unable to travel, you may be entitled to a refund.
You can find the full details of your passenger rights here.
That depends on how you bought your ticket:
- Bought at the station (paper ticket):
Return your unused ticket to the original retailer within 28 days of its expiry.
- Bought online or via the Northern app:
You can apply for a refund online. It’s quick and easy.
Once we’ve verified your details, we’ll be in touch about your refund.
Just make sure your ticket was issued by Northern, we can’t refund train tickets from other providers.
If your train has been cancelled and you couldn’t complete your journey, you can [Link] claim a full refund from us, as long as:
● You bought your ticket directly from Northern
● You submit your claim within 28 days of your ticket’s expiry
We use NatWest’s Payit™ system, so getting a refund is quicker and more efficient.
● Off-peak and Anytime tickets:
These tickets can be refunded if you wish to cancel and travel on a different day. You may be subject to an admin charge.
● Advance tickets:
These tickets are non-refundable.
But, there’s good news. You can switch to another same-day Northern service, for as little as £1.50.
Changes can be made one day in advance of your original train journey or up to 10 minutes before its departure.
If your train was cancelled, most ticket types are refundable, including:

● Off-peak
● Anytime
To claim a refund through Northern, your ticket must have been purchased directly from us.
