Preston (Lancs) Train Station

facilities

During the era of coaches, Preston had become an important centre for postal traffic travelling from London to Scotland, which helped fuel the Lancashire economy, and this importance contributed to the development of the rail network around Preston. Passengers soon followed and the station, opened in 1838, became a popular rest stop for those heading to the Highlands of Scotland. As a result, the station’s restaurant grew increasingly busy, and during both World Wars provided free meals for servicemen. The subscription funded Free Buffet Association served over 12 million cups of tea between 1939 and 1945 alone!

Preston has numerous places of interest just outside the station for you to explore, all within walking distance.

Liverpool Lime Street Train Station

facilities

Located in Liverpool, Merseyside, Liverpool Lime Street opened its doors in 1836, and underwent large-scale redevelopment in the early 2000s in conjunction with the city being named European Capital Culture for 2008. With nearly 20 million commuters passing through the station yearly, and being at the heart of the popular attractions, it’s the busiest station in Liverpool.

The station was designed by architects Arthur Holme, John Cunningham, and John Foster, and had four large gateways, two of which were intentionally nonfunctional - demonstrating how important appearance and functionality can be to the final result. The latest incarnation has resulted in an impressive station fit for the new millennium, featuring improved facilities, a more streamlined infrastructure, and a much better passenger experience.

Liverpool Lime Street Station is divided into two sections. The mainline station offers national intercity and regional overground services and was awarded Station of the Year in 2010, whilst underground, there’s the Merseyrail Underground station.

York Train Station

facilities

A station has been on this site since 1839, only nine years after George Stephenson built the first inter-city line. Originally a wooden building, the impressive 13 platform stone station was opened in 1877 and was easily the largest in the world. Over the interim years, new platforms have been added, and although it suffered heavily in World War II, it’s been tastefully restored to its most iconic architectural period. The heavy glass and curling iron roof, so typical of the Victorian era as it headed into the splendor of Art Nouveau, still graces the ceilings of the concourse, earning the station Grade II listed status.

Close to shops, bars, and restaurants, there’s so much to see and do in York, and it’s all just a stone’s throw from the station.
