Huddersfield Train Station

facilities

While Leeds Station is the busiest in Yorkshire, Huddersfield is a close second, seeing almost 5 million passengers annually. Opened in 1850, its stunning neoclassical facade helped the building earn a Grade I listing, and with a 1 million pound makeover in 2009, it went on to be awarded the Europa Nostra for outstanding architecture.

The station frontage includes two popular pubs -The Head Of Steam and The King's Head, one on either side of the main entrance, and both travellers and locals alike can often be seen spilling out onto the street.

Making the station their home are two much-loved cats - Felix and Bolt. Both have roamed the platforms since kittenhood, and they even have their own catflap, enabling them to bypass the ticket office (where would they carry their change to buy their tickets, after all?).

In 2016, Felix was promoted to Senior Pest Controller, a role he takes very seriously, and his likeness hangs in the Station, painted by artist Rob Martin. Bolt has only been at the station since 2018 but as Junior Pest Controller, he is doing very well.

If you are heading to Huddersfield on a day out, Northern has a number of ticket options that enable you to save money for your trip. These include the Family and Friends Railcard and Advance tickets for those that enjoy being organised.

The County Durham market town of Darlington is served by the richly decorated Victorian station, enjoying the impressive sight across the sprawling town to the much-loved River Skerne.

Growing in size during the second half of the 19th century, the town became important for its railway manufacturing, and the Hopetown Carriage Works was the main employer in the area. Whitby Train Station

facilities

Whitby, made famous by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, is served by one of the UK’s oldest stations, which opened in 1836. Originally the passengers were offered carriages drawn by horses to get to Pickering, the nearby market town - thankfully, despite the area’s spooky reputation, headless horses were never used! Famed for its large goods sheds, Whitby Station had an unusual signal box, consisting of three storeys designed to allow the signalman to see over the sheds.

Nowadays this Grade II listed station sees almost 200,000 people through its doors annually. Passenger numbers are given another boost twice a year when Whitby Gothic Weekend opens its embrace to fans of the macabre from all around the world.

If you’re travelling to the popular destination of Whitby by train, there are plenty of opportunities to save money with Northern’s special offers. These include Save on the Day for last-minute trips, and flexible Anytime tickets, allowing you the freedom to choose your own schedule.
