Good news! Rail fares have been frozen for the first time in 30 years, helping keep your journeys with us more affordable. Across England, this freeze is expected to save passengers a total of around £600 million this year.
This means many of our fares won’t be going up until March 2027, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Some onwards journeys outside the North, like those into Scotland or Wales, may not be included. Our Advanced fares are also not included in the freeze.

Child fares are included in the freeze too, and children under 5 still travel for free across our network.
Off-Peak fares are included in the freeze and are a great way to travel for less if you can be flexible. If your ticket isn’t covered, you can still save by booking in advance or using a Railcard.
No, there’s nothing you need to do. If your journey is included, your fare will stay the same automatically. Just buy your ticket and travel as normal., using our app, website, ticket machines or station ticket offices.
