Hot weather travel advice
Northern advises customers to check before they travel as extreme heat affects trains.
As the UK experiences much higher temperatures than normal, unfortunately, this increases the risk of issues on the rail network and delays to trains, which can mean your service is less reliable than usual.
To help keep customers on the move as much as possible and keep our services as reliable as we can, on Friday, 10 July, we're running fewer trains in some areas so we can focus on keeping the trains that do run operating as efficiently as possible.
We know how frustrating it can be when extreme weather conditions interrupt usual service, and we will do everything we can to help.
We will continue to monitor conditions closely and may make further changes.
The list of routes which will run fewer trains is below - make sure you check before heading for your usual service. If you need any help, look out for our colleagues at the station who are ready to assist.
Changes may not appear in journey planners until the evening of Thursday 9 July.

- Check before you travel
- Allow extra time for your journey
- Travel earlier, where possible, to avoid the busiest services
- Bring water to stay hydrated
- If you feel unwell, please do not board the train and speak to a member of station staff or use a help point
- If you start to feel ill on board, avoid using the emergency alarm between stations – it’s better to wait until the train is at a platform where help can reach you more quickly and safely
Routes with fewer services
If you’re travelling in the following areas, please check to see if your journey could be affected.
To help keep trains running during the extreme heat, we are unfortunately having to substantially reduce the number of trains running on routes in and out of Manchester.
This is to ensure we can continue to run some services reliably; however, this does mean that the trains which are running will be in high demand.
We strongly recommend customers consider whether their journey is necessary, and if you do choose to travel tomorrow, please check before you travel, prepare for longer waiting times, busy trains and short-notice cancellations.
We know some of our customers still need to travel, and we are doing everything we can to keep people moving as efficiently as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience caused by this and will keep customers updated as much as possible on any changes.
