Hindley station improvements
Hindley station
From mid-March 2026 work will begin at Hindley station to install new lifts and upgrade facilities.
Services will run as normal, but there will be changes around the station while the improvements take place.
The station improvement works are part of a collaborative effort between Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), Northern, and Network Rail, with funding provided by the government and Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
What improvements will be made?
£6.5m will be invested in the station to improve accessibility for all passengers.
This will see the installation of two new passenger lifts, along with a new footbridge, ensuring step-free access to and from the platforms.
The station’s lighting and CCTV at the lifts and assistance areas will also be upgraded, providing a better and safer experience for train passengers.
Work will take place this year, with completion expected by Spring 2027. Rail services will run as normal during this time.
Will the improvements lead to any disruptions?
- The ticket office and station building will be closed for some of this time while improvements are made. Tickets can be bought through the ticket machines, on the Northern website, app and on the train.
- A temporary footpath will be installed during the works, to provide access to both platforms.
While these works will deliver important benefits and step-free access at the station, there will be some disruption during the construction phase:
- The site team will be carrying out construction works on weekdays (between 7am and 6pm) and at night, during some weekends. Work will only take place during the night when it’s essential, to allow safe access to the tracks when trains aren’t running.
- A section of Railway Street (between Ladies Lane and Hoade Street) will be closed to vehicles between mid-May 2026 – early 2027 to allow people safe access to platform 2 and to ensure resident safety whilst works are ongoing.
- Some other road closures may be required to install the new lifts, with details confirmed closer to the time.
- All work areas will be separate from members of the public to minimise the impact, although we apologise in advance for any disruption.
For further updates and information regarding the progress of these works, please stay tuned to announcements from Northern, as well as our partners Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), and Network Rail.
Thank you for bearing with us while we carry out these improvements.
Once complete, Hindley station will have step-free access and better facilities, making it easier and safer for everyone to travel.
