New timetables and planned disruption

Join us as a Conductor and you'll experience one of the best training programmes in the rail industry. Our 12-month Level 2 Conductor Apprenticeship offers the latest virtual reality, immersive reality, and augmented reality training. And with practical and classroom-based learning on top, you'll discover that we're ready to invest more into your future than you think.

You’ll find our Conductors on our trains and they’re always on hand to help customers along their journeys. And there’s a lot more to this job than just checking tickets and travel documents. It’s also about creating a rapport with customers and being the face of our business, together with:

  • Contributing to the safe operation of the train, including door operation and dispatch
  • Walking through carriages, and answering customers’ questions about routes, arrival times and connections
  • Checking, scanning and selling a wide variety of tickets and travel documents
  • Making announcements over the public-address system
  • Making sure our customers get on and off the train safely
  • Dealing with any unexpected delays and managing disruption onboard
  • Dealing with out of course and emergency situations

It all means you’ll need to be able to work well under pressure, make decisions and use your initiative. It’s also important to be friendly and outgoing and someone who’s not afraid to make conversation and help our customers have a relaxed, easy, enjoyable and safe journey. Doing your thing as a conductor is all about providing a real Northern experience. There’s never a boring day in this job!

This is an apprenticeship role, which means your training to become a Conductor will also involve working towards a Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard. It begins with an intensive 3-month training period where you’ll learn all about the safety critical and operational aspects and responsibilities. And continues with more training around how to deliver exceptional customer service to help us make a positive impact for the North in all we do and for all we serve.

Heres what we look for:

Customers are at the heart of our business and we look for people who:

  • Excel at delivering customer service
  • Are highly motivated, positive and enthusiastic.
  • Have the ability to make decisions confidently and calmly, often under pressure.
  • Can use their own own initiative
  • Are great team players

It’s also important that you’re flexible enough to work varying shift patterns that can start at any time of day/night and over weekends. Your working week will average 35 hours, but it can vary depending on your shift patterns.

Due to the early starts and late finishes, you’ll also need to be able to get to work without relying on public transport. That means you must live within a 45-minute car journey from your place of work.

Our Conductor recruitment process consists of some online assessments, an interview and a medical which includes a drugs and alcohol screen. The safety critical nature of this role means that unfortunately you wont be able to progress if you have defective colour vision.
