Looking for something?

We know that sometimes we can all be in a rush and sometimes forget the basics that help us to keep ourselves and others safe. Which is why we have put together the following tips to help you travel safely.

At the station

  • Running at the station can lead to trips and slips so take your time - arrive a little earlier to avoid rushing through the station
  • Take care on stairs and escalators - keep left and hold the handrail
  • Carrying luggage, extra bags or maybe a buggy? Use the lift where possible and don’t battle with the stairs
  • When using the lift, stand clear of the doors and take care stepping in and out
  • Phones and tablets can be distracting. Take extra care using them in the station
  • Help others less able than yourself if they’re struggling
  • Stand back from the platform edge
  • When the weather is wet or icy, make sure you take extra time as surfaces may be slippery.

Train doors

  • Train doors close 30-60 seconds before departure (depending on station). This is so the train can be dispatched safely, and timely from, the station
  • Make sure you allow enough time to board the train, doors cannot be held
  • Stand well back from closing doors, items may get trapped and doors do not automatically open
  • Do not block doors with luggage or buggies.

Mind the gap

  • Let others off before you get on
  • Use the train handrails where possible and take your time
  • Help small children to get on and off safely.

Feeling unwell?

  • If you feel unwell at the station, we’re in a better position to help you there whether that be station staff or via the help point
  • If you feel unwell on the train, try and take a seat, open a window (where possible) and speak with the conductor.
  • You should avoid pressing the emergency buttons as this may delay getting help to you.
