Northern offer both standard and flexible train tickets, with the main differences being their flexibility and refund policy.

Standard train tickets, which are also known as Advance tickets are typically the cheaper option and are non-refundable. If you miss your train or change your plans, you cannot get a refund or exchange the ticket for another date or time. These tickets are best suited for travellers who are sure about their travel plans and don’t anticipate any changes.

On the other hand, flexible train tickets, which include Anytime Train Tickets and Off-Peak Train Tickets are a little more expensive but offer more flexibility. They allow you to change your travel plans and even receive a full refund if needed. For example, if you miss your train or need to travel on a different date or time, you can change your ticket to a new train at no extra cost. These tickets are ideal for travellers who need more flexibility, as they can be changed or refunded up until the time of travel.

Another difference between standard and flexible tickets is that flexible tickets are typically valid for a longer period of time. A flexible ticket, for example, is valid for travel within a specific time frame, such as one month, whereas a standard ticket is only valid for a particular date and time.

Regarding booking, standard tickets can be purchased until the day of travel, while flexible tickets are only available in advance. Passengers can book a few weeks or months in advance to take advantage of its flexibility.

When choosing between a standard and a flexible ticket, you should weigh the cost versus the level of flexibility. A standard ticket will likely be the more economical option if you’re sure about your travel plans and don’t anticipate any changes. However, if you need the peace of mind to change or cancel your plans, a flexible ticket may be the better choice
