Get inspired with a selection of our itineraries
We've designed some itineraries to give you an idea of how to make the most of your Cumbria travel pass. Remember, you can hop on and off any Northern, TransPennine and Avanti trains, Stagecoach buses, and Windermere Cruises, so feel free to adapt the times and spend a little more time at one of your stops, or change route and find a hidden gem!
Catch the Lakes Line to Windermere. Next to the station, you’ll find Booths Supermarket which is the perfect place to pick up some refreshments and find local produce to take home with you.
From Windermere Train Station, it’s a 1-mile walk down to Bowness on Windermere (you can also catch the 599 bus).

Once in Bowness-on-Windermere, there are several attractions to enjoy. Beatrix Potter fans can take a trip to the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction followed by lunch at the Peter Rabbit Café across the road. The Windermere Jetty Museum is just a short walk from the bus stop, offering an insight into the stories of the people who worked on the lake. Or, you can simply enjoy a stroll along the waterfront and admire the views across Windermere.

Then, it’s time to board a Windermere Lake Cruises service to Ambleside. Hop off and enjoy a drink at the Wateredge Inn or take a walk around this pretty Lakeland town. Then, take the bus back to Windermere Station to return home.

Alternatively, from Bowness-on-Windermere take the Windermere Lake Cruises service to Lakeside, where you can either explore the Lakes Aquarium or take a steam train ride with Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway, before returning to Bowness-on-Windermere by boat and heading back to the train station.
Day 1
From Lancaster, travel to Grange over Sands on the Furness Line. Here, enjoy a walk along the prom and stop for lunch at The Grange Hotel or Clare House Hotel. Then, it’s back on the train to the market town of Ulverston. Hop off and explore attractions like Cumbria Crystal, the Laurel & Hardy Museum, and Shed 1 Distillery (book ahead).

Take the train to Barrow, where you’ll find The Dock Museum – a free, family friendly museum showcasing the Furness area’s rich history, including exhibits about the area’s shipbuilding heritage. Nature lovers can head to South Walney Nature Reserve, home to Cumbria’s only grey seal colony.
Stay: In Grange over Sands, stay at The Grange Hotel, Grange Manor, or Clare House Hotel. In Barrow, there’s the Holiday Inn Express in the town centre or the King Alfred Hotel on Walney Island.
Day 2
Today, it’s off to the coastal village of Ravenglass – the only coastal village in the Lake District National Park, and uniquely located in two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Along the way, hop off at Silecroft and head to the Sunset Café on Silecroft beach for morning coffee and cake overlooking the Irish Sea.

Then, it’s on to Ravenglass. Hop off your northern train and onto the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (located at the train station) for a scenic steam train ride into the Lake District. If you fancy a walk, you can disembark at Dalegarth for Boot at the end of the line and take a stroll along the Eskdale TRail – an 8.5 mile trail taking in sights and attractions like Stanley Ghyll waterfall and the medieval Muncaster Castle.

Stay: Opt for The Pennington Hotel in Ravenglass or something a little different with self-catering converted train coaches at the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway.
