Northern calls on Super League fans to plan ahead for Grand Final

Northern is calling on all Super League fans to plan their travel carefully ahead of this weekend’s Grand Final at Old Trafford.

The showpiece event, featuring Warrington and Wigan, kicks off at 6pm on Saturday 13 October – the same day RMT union is carrying out strike action on the Northern network.

As a result of the industrial action there will be no Northern trains between Wigan and Manchester on Saturday and very few services to and from Warrington – with no services scheduled after the match.

Liam Sumpter, Regional Director for Northern, said: “It is disappointing that RMT has chosen to strike on a day which has such important for the Rugby League fans across the north of England.

“We are doing everything we can to run as many trains as possible, but options to and from Warrington and Wigan are extremely limited. We are, therefore, asking our customers to plan carefully and, where possible, use alternative transport.”

For fans heading to and from Warrington, East Midlands Trains and Arriva Trains Wales will run a regular service between Manchester and Warrington.

Liam added: “We are working closely with colleagues across the transport industry – and with Super League – to give fans as many options as possible to get to and from the season finale.

“We will have people out an about at stations and on trains to give advice and will even have Northern staff at Old Trafford to help fans get where they need to be.”

Full details of Northern’s timetables for Saturday 13 October – RMT’s 31st day of strike action – can be found online at www.northernrailway.co.uk/strike or via National Rail Enquiries.
