Whitley Bay Beach is one of the many beautiful beaches found in the North East. Home to a glorious stretch of golden sand, this Blue Flag awarded beach is primed for long walks along the coast in the company of your four-legged friend. Seasonal restrictions may apply to dogs due to the number of people that flock here in the summer months. But when the beach isn’t too busy, there’s nowhere better to simply stroll (or swim) your way along the seafront and admire the rocks, dunes, cliffs and historic St. Mary’s Lighthouse that frames the cover of many a postcard.

For heritage days out with the dog, look no further than the stately Auckland Castle Deer House. Built in 1760, this atmospheric Georgian Gothic edifice commands a prominent position overlooking the River Wear. But beyond the building’s centuries-old walls, well-behaved dogs on leads are assured to love the 150 acres of idyllic parkland that are open between March and October. Following a stroll around the scenic landscapes – which inspired the likes of JMW Turner – head into nearby Bishop Auckland for a pooch-friendly pint in Caps Off.
