05 October 2020
Northern is warning customers travelling between Liverpool and Manchester that their journey will be disrupted following a landslip at Roby.

As a result of the landslip, which is currently being investigated by Network Rail, a number of services to and from Liverpool Lime Street are likely to face delays, diversions and cancellations.

The line is completely blocked and trains are unable to operate along the route. Northern services in the area are currently running as follows:

  • Blackpool - Liverpool will operate Blackpool to Huyton
  • Manchester – Liverpool (via Newton le Willows will operate Manchester to Huyton
  • Liverpool - Wigan services are cancelled
  • Liverpool - Warrington Bank Quay services are cancelled
  • Liverpool - Crewe will operate Earlestown - Crewe

Rail replacement buses will operate between Liverpool Lime Street and St Helens as well as between Liverpool Lime Street and Huyton. All buses will depart on the hour and half past the hour. Journey times are likely to be extended by around 90 minutes due to traffic conditions.

Customers travelling between Liverpool and Manchester may use their tickets on Northern or East Midlands Railway services via Warrington.

A spokesperson for Northern said: "Northern apologises for any impact this incident may have on our customers' journeys this evening.  We are working closely with colleagues at Network Rail to investigate the landslip, but it is too early to say when services will be back to normal on the route.

"In the meantime we are asking all our customers planning to travel on the route to think carefully about their journeys and to allow extra time for travel. There will be announcements at stations to help customers and and we will do everything we can to get people where they need to be."

For up-to-the-minute train running information customers are advised to check National Rail Enquiries.

Delay Repay compensation is available for any customers whose journeys are delayed by 15 minutes or longer.
