Northern launches 10 rail trails - walks from train stations in the north of England

Northern has launched a series of 10 walks, which start and finish at railway stations in the north of England, in time for the start of the spring walking season.

Working with experts from the popular TV series Walks Around Britain, Northern has developed a range of walks to suit all abilities. They include city walks, costal walks, walks suitable for young children and scenic walks – all of which can all be downloaded from Northern’s website and include step-by-step guides, time guide, difficulty grading,  dog  friendliness and map including OS references.

Paul Barnfield, Northern’s Regional Director, said: “This collection of walks is part of our We Are Northern campaign which celebrates everything the north of England has to offer. We have some fabulous places for walking all across the north, many of which can be accessed from one of our stations, including Hull, Knaresborough and Ribblehead.

“Our trains stop at remote villages, busy market towns and thriving cities and once you’re there, there’s no better way to explore than on foot and these walks do just that. The walks launched today are the first 10, but we will be adding more during the coming months.”

The walks

  • Hull city walk - an easy but interesting circular walk (4 miles/6.4km) around the 2017 UK City of Culture which takes in Hull’s key historical landmarks from Hull Paragon station.
  • Knaresborough to Harrogate - a linear walk (4 miles/6.4km) between picturesque Knaresborough and the bustle of Harrogate along public footpaths and the National Cycle Network, start from Knaresborough station and finish at Harrogate station.
  • Ribblehead Circular - takes in the magnificent Ribblehead Viaduct beneath the watchful gaze of two of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, Whernside and Ingleborough (3.6 miles/5.8km) from Ribblehead station.
  • Mam Tor - a short circular walk (4 miles/6.4km) with a challenging climb and spectacular views across the Peak District from Edale station.
  • Windermere to Orrest Head - a short circular walk (2 miles/3.2km) with a staggering view from Windermere station.
  • Chester city centre - a circular walk (3.2 miles/5.2km) with the Roman walls of Chester providing a fantastic vantage point to see the historical city from Chester station.
  • Buxton - circular walk (7.5 miles/12.1km) taking in some breathtaking landscapes on the edge of the Peak District National Park from Buxton station.
  • Arnside - a circular walk (6 miles/9.7km) which includes great views, walks along the beach and fabulous wildlife from Arnside station.
  • Saltburn-by-the Sea - a circular walk (5 miles/8km) taking in the highest point of this coast with amazing views all around and part of the magnificent Cleveland Way from Saltburn station.
  • Blackpool - a linear walk (3 miles/4.8km) along the front which takes in all the famous entertainment landmarks, including the Golden Mile, along the coast of the Irish Sea. Starts from Blackpool North station and ends at Blackpool Pleasure Beach station.
