Weekend engineering work on the Ordsall Chord is due to start from 29 October, with a bigger programme of work over Christmas, running from Sunday 18 December to Monday 2 January.

How will this affect services and stations?

This will affect services to and from Manchester, with train services unable to cross Manchester. There will be changes to train times and some replacement bus services.  For those who do need to cross Manchester, you will be able to use your train ticket to travel on Metrolink services between Manchester Piccadilly and Victoria, between 18 December and 2 January.

Oxford Road and Deansgate stations will be closed on December 27 and 31 as well as January 1 and 2.  All stations will be closed to train services on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

What benefits will we get from the work?

This work will improve connections between Manchester stations through linking Manchester Piccadilly, Oxford Road and Victoria. It will provide direct links to Manchester Airport from across the North. It will also reduce the amount of congestion at Manchester Piccadilly by a quarter.

What work is involved in this project?

The work will involve engineers moving existing track on the Ordsall Lane junction, Middlewood Viaduct, Water Street junction, Victoria junction and Trafford Park to Piccadilly lines.  The track realignment will allow the 300 metre chord to connect with the new layout before all work is completed by December 2017.

Other work will consist of the installation of a new bridge and renovation of two existing bridges on Water Street.  There will also be signalling improvements as well as constructing new overhead line equipment.
