Attracting young people to work in rail crucial to achieving net zero operations by 2050, says Northern

Northern says attracting young people to work in the rail industry is crucial to helping them achieve net zero operations by 2050.

The train operator says their creativity, tenacity and eagerness to succeed will have a really positive impact on their environmental mission.

They are encouraging young people that are passionate about the environment to join the business through a range of apprenticeship opportunities, ‘Year in Industry’ placements and its graduate scheme.

Every year, vacancies are up for grabs in departments such as engineering, operations, customer service, commercial and finance.

The next round of recruitment will take place in the autumn and anyone interested should register for job alerts on the Northern website: northernrailway.co.uk/careers

Northern has made the call ahead of International Youth Day on Monday (12 August) which this year focusses on ‘youth empowerment for a sustainable future’.

Lisa Leighton, people director at Northern, said: “The rail industry is already making great strides to ensure it operates in the most efficient, innovative and inclusive way that it can.

“It’s important that we maintain that momentum and attracting young people to work in rail will be crucial to us delivering on our long-held ambition to achieve net zero operations by 2050.

“To support this, we have a range of programmes to help young people develop the business and role-specific skills that our industry’s future leaders will need.”

International Youth Day is an annual event organised by the United Nations to recognise the many contributions of young people to society.
