The people who drive our business are just as important as the people who drive our trains.

Behind the scenes at Northern, you'll find hundreds of fantastic individuals working across a variety of Support Functions, mostly out of our offices in York, Manchester and Leeds. These are the people at the very core of our business - helping us to build and maintain our fantastic reputation.

Our Departments

Performance and Planning

The Performance & Planning Department provides the opportunity to be involved in the shaping of our future railway from timetable engineering and special event planning in the Service Planning team, provision of train crew for our services in the Resource Planning team, keeping our finger on the pulse in Control by ensuring the safe delivery of our 2500+ passenger train journeys, through to the Performance team who are responsible for monitoring and leading performance improvement.

Northern operates over 2500 services per day and approximately 87 million passengers per year.

We're an enthusiastic team, involved in a number of wide ranging issues, liaising with internal & industry colleagues and key stakeholders, and have the opportunity to really make a difference. The Performance and Planning department is an exciting place to work if you are passionate about railways and enjoy a challenge.

Human Resources

Human Resources is where we select the very best individuals to join us, where we develop them and where we make sure they're recognised and rewarded for what they do.

Joining us is an opportunity to learn what HR management is all about in a fast moving industrial environment where the work is hugely varied and no less challenging. Here you can improve and expand your HR knowledge as far as your ambition takes you, standing you in fantastic stead for your future.

Recent challenges for the department, for instance, have been developing the demographic profile of our employee base. What kind of ideas could you bring to make sure we're representing the full spectrum of jobseekers in our regions?

Safety and Assurance

Safety & Assurance is where we make sure the business is compliant with all relevant legislation through the writing of procedures and auditing. It's also our job to maintain the British Standard in Safety Management Systems. All of this can be a truly exciting challenge across a business as large as Northern.

No two days are the same here. Just when you think you've seen every Safety & Assurance challenge there is, you'll come in and find yourself faced with a new one. There are new projects being developed that you can work on and they require fresh approaches and new ways of thinking, so it's a pretty sharp department.

Right now, we're focused on getting our internal customers to get more involved with safety - making it something that they want to get proactively involved in. We've set ourselves a target for safety improvements across the business and we're determined to meet it.

Finance and IS

The Finance & IS departments are central to helping us achieve our performance targets in terms of customer satisfaction, future developments and financial goals.

The IS team provides a complete IT service to the company, developing, protecting and exploiting our investment in computer hardware, software and data.

The Finance team manages and directs the financial processes and systems towards our primary objectives, based on profit and return on capital. They contribute to the overall strategic and commercial direction of the business playing a major role in business growth whilst maintaining financial control and instigating best practice in corporate transactions.

The team also ensures that a framework of planning, monitoring, evaluation and reporting systems exist to ensure financial performance is accurately measured, that variations are identified and appropriate action is taken, whilst directing resources to pursue and exploit all opportunities to maximise our business performance.

Marketing, internal and external communications, customer relations, the infrastructure of our stations - these are the kinds of activities we get our teeth into in the Commercial department.

It's really all about promoting business excellence throughout Northern, attracting new customers and making sure that revenues are increased as a result. Crucial work indeed. Join this department and you'll be at the very hub of the business. It's a vibrant team with a lot of passion for the work - which involves day-to-day involvement with both customers and key stakeholders - and, of course, for the results too.

At the moment, we're knee-deep in developing our social networking activities so we can get closer to our customers. Plus, we're also working out new ways that customers can buy a ticket for a Northern journey, looking at mobile technology and similar new technologies - all very exciting stuff.
