Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are fast becoming the norm for people who want to fast-track their careers. And if that sounds like you, and you want to go do you thing in the transport industry, we can help. And give you the Northern experience - in every sense of the word.
Join us and you’ll take you first steps in one of a number of careers in train planning, control, customer service, engineer and more. And you’ll have the full support of our dedicated team of Operational Trainers, Apprentice Coaches and Quality Assurance specialists - who are all committed to helping you earn while you learn in roles which lead to recognised qualifications.
What’s involved?
Your time here will begin with a fantastic induction that will introduce you to our amazing business and the way we work, while helping you build your knowledge around your role and the rail industry itself. And it will offer some unique and exciting experiences that only Northern people get to be part of - such as tours of our depots and our customer experience centre.
While working here, you’ll attend college two days a month where your tutor will visit you to assess your skills, set assignments that are tailored to your role, and guide your professional development to help you gain your qualifications. We’ll expect you to work on your assignments outside of the classroom too, and we’ll give you all the resources you need - including plenty of study days - to help you succeed.
What’s more, you’ll also spend time working as a team with other Northern apprentices to develop and drive a project aimed at improving one of our stations. This is a great opportunity to build a wide range of skills, as you could be working closely with local businesses, the public and even local government. And because it will involve developing funding bids and presenting your results to some of our directors and senior managers, it’s a unique opportunity for you to show the world what you’re really made of.
