Northern network continues to recover from earlier flooding (updated 8.15pm)

01 October 2019
Northern's network continues to recover from heavy rain throughout the day which caused flooding and disruption on a number of routes.

Some delays and short notice cancellations are possible on a small number of routes as timetables stabilise.

Although flood waters are subsiding Northern customers are still advised to allow extra time for travel and to check ahead.

Status at 8.15pm on Tuesday 1 October (updates in bold)

  • The line between Hexham and Carlisle has fully opened following a landslip at Wetherall - Network Rail has worked through the day to clear debris and reinforce the embankment (pictured). Delays and some cancellations are likely for the remainder of today (Tuesday 1 October). All rail replacement buses have now been withdrawn.
  • Flooding in Cumbria between Barrow and Carlisle has cleared with all routes now passable. Services are reinstated, though there may be delays in the area for the rest of the evening.
  • All other lines are operating normally.
