Northern to deliver improved connections between Middlesbrough and Whitby

Northern is to introduce more rail services to provide improved connections between Middlesbrough and Whitby.

As part of the train operator’s plans, two extra services will be added per day between the two towns, boosting peak-time options for customers.

Anna Weeks, Regional Director at Northern, said: “We know how vital the link between Middlesbrough and Whitby is and with the support of Network Rail have added two extra services each way to give our customers more choice and flexibility.

“The improved services, to be introduced from 15 December, will offer new commuting possibilities to Middlesbrough, Newcastle and elsewhere in the region and a morning arrival into will become London possible. Evening journeys to Whitby, will help link the seaside resort to afternoon peak departures from London and allow return travel from the town at night, opening up greater leisure travel options.

The service enhancements will go hand-in-hand with further modernisation by Northern in the region. From 15 December all Pacers will be removed from the North East, with more refurbished trains introduced and continued improvements at stations planned into 2020.

Anna added: “As we move into 2020 our customers will see further improvements as we work to modernise our stations and facilities. We will also continue to improve our current fleet of trains to include more space, better seats (with USB sockets) and Wi-Fi, and will seek to further improve journey times across the North East.”
