More than 1,000 services keep Northern customers on the move - 6pm industrial action update

More than 1,000 Northern rail services have already ensured people across the north of England have kept on the move during industrial action today (Friday 28 April).

A revised timetable, which has also included more than 300 rail replacement buses, has ensured that Northern customers have been able to get to and from their destinations at the start of the bank holiday weekend.

And some services even had extra carriages added, particularly those on the Wolds coast where hundreds travelled to watch the first stage of the Tour de Yorkshire.

Services are now starting to wind down and any customers who still want to travel on Northern services this evening need to think quickly about their plans.

Sharon Keith, Regional Director at Northern, said: “It has been a challenging and busy day across the network, but by 5.45pm we had been able to run more than 1,000 rail services.

“We also operated more than 300 rail replacement buses and had ticket acceptance in place on many other train operators. This all meant the north of England – and those visiting the region for special events and the start of the bank holiday weekend – has been kept on the move.

“As we approach the end of the operating day I would like to remind customers to continue to plan carefully. We have very few services after 7pm so my advice is to check ahead before you travel.”

Sharon added: “Again, I would like to say thank you to all our customers who have shown patience and understanding throughout the day. And also thank you to Northern staff who have worked hard to plan and provide services for our customers.”

For full details of the remaining rail services operating during the rest of today and for FAQs about Northern's response to the strike please check the industrial action page www.northernrailway.co.uk/industrialaction.
