Customers advised not to travel following flooding and heavy snow between Manchester and Sheffield

Northern customers are being advised not to travel between Manchester and Sheffield due to flooding on the line at Chinley.

Heavy rain has caused flooding that has blocked the railway and with heavy snow continuing to fall in Sheffield it is not possible to operate rail replacement road transport.

Northern is keeping the route under constant review and will seek to reintroduce services as soon as it is safe to do so. In the meantime customers are asked not to travel between Manchester and Sheffield until further notice.

Chris Jackson, Regional Director at Northern, said: "The adverse weather conditions we've soon overnight and into this morning are now having a significant impact on our ability to operate services safely between Manchester and Sheffield.

"We've taken the difficult decision to ask customers not to travel between the two cities until further notice as the flood water means we cannot run trains and the heavy snow is making roads treacherous."

Chris added: "I'd like to thank our customers for their understanding and patience and want to reassure people who have journeys to make that we will do all we can to get them on the move as soon as possible."

Northern customers are advised to check www.nationalrail.co.uk for the latest travel information.
