Huddersfield station closed for major improvement works

Saturday 30 August to Sunday 28 September 2025

Huddersfield station will be closed for 30 days while major engineering improvement works take place as part of the TransPennine Route Upgrade (TRU).

We’re working with Network Rail and TransPennine Express to improve the railway through Huddersfield – including longer platforms, upgraded track and signalling, and essential repairs to the viaduct.

What this means for your journey?

During this time, no trains will run in or out of Huddersfield station. Rail replacement buses will run to and from Huddersfield, while other train services will be revised.

A map showing routes where trains will be running in green and routes where replacement buses will run instead of trains in red.

Key travel advice

  • Check before you travel – journey times will be longer and you may need to change onto a rail replacement bus if travelling in the area.
  • Rail replacement buses will connect Huddersfield with nearby stations including Brighouse, Wakefield Kirkgate, Barnsley, Penistone, Stalybridge, Berry Bow.
  • Some train services will be diverted or start/finish at different stations, meaning longer journey times.
  • TransPennine Express (TPE) trains are also affected - check their website for details.

Changes to your route

These trains will not run. Rail replacement services will run between Huddersfield and Brighouse every 15 minutes to connect with onward services including local stopping services between Leeds and Bradford via Dewsbury/Brighouse and also fast services between Manchester and Leeds.

These trains will not run from Huddersfield. During the 30-day closure, a local stopping service will operate between Leeds and Bradford Interchange via Dewsbury (between Leeds and Halifax on a Sunday), calling at Cottingley, Morley, Batley, Dewsbury, Ravensthorpe, Mirfield, Brighouse, Halifax and Low Moor. For Huddersfield there is a replacement bus running from Brighouse to Huddersfield.

  • 30 August to 7 September, and 27 to 28 September:
Trains will operate between Penistone and Sheffield only. A replacement bus will run between Huddersfield and Penistone, calling at all stations, to connect with train services to Sheffield. Additionally, a replacement bus will operate non-stop between Huddersfield and Barnsley.
  • 8 to 26 September:
Trains will operate between Berry Brow and Sheffield only and departure times will change. A replacement bus will run between Huddersfield and Berry Brow, calling at Lockwood, to connect with train services to Sheffield.

Although not routed via Huddersfield this service is also affected and will be split into two services:

  • Wigan Wallgate - Todmorden
  • Halifax - Leeds (via Dewsbury)

For stations between Todmorden and Halifax, use other Northern services.

One train per hour each way will not call at Castleton.

These services will not call at Walsden.

TransPennine Express services are also amended due to the engineering works. To keep customers moving by train, services will be diverted via the Calder Valley, calling additionally at Brighouse. Some services will additionally call at Hebden Bridge, Sowerby Bridge, and Castleton. Visit the TransPennine website for more information about changes to their services.

When Huddersfield Station Reopens

Following the 30-day closure, works will continue at Huddersfield until January 2027. During this time, the station will operate with a reduced number of platforms, meaning there will be changes to the timetable for services that would usually start or end their journey at Huddersfield. Local stopping services that run between Huddersfield and Leeds / Bradford are affected. Here's how the changes impact those routes:

This service will be diverted and no longer call at Deighton or Huddersfield. Monday to Saturday, this service will additionally call at Brighouse, Halifax, Low Moor and terminate at Bradford Interchange. On Sundays this service will call additionally at Brighouse and terminating at Halifax. If travelling from Huddersfield to local stations, customers will need to change at Mirfield or use the hourly bus service to Brighouse and change for train services to Leeds.

This service will not run. If travelling to Bradford, customers will need to change at Mirfield, or use the hourly rail replacement bus service to Brighouse and change for train services towards Halifax.

From Saturday 30 August, Deighton station will temporarily close as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU). When it reopens in 2027, customers will experience a completely rebuilt, modern station designed for faster, greener and more reliable journeys. While the station is closed, an hourly rail replacement bus service will operate between Huddersfield, Deighton and Brighouse, where onward rail connections are available.
